Resource-efficient alternatives can include bamboo fibres, which require less water to produce than many conventional materials, and recycled polyester created through plastic-to-fabric initiatives.

By reducing reliance on third-party brokers and retaining direct oversight of core manufacturing operations in Sri Lanka, we can control quality and material composition more closely. This approach supports fair labour standards and material resilience while also producing the transparent, auditable information required for carbon accounting.

The resulting data contributes to our environmental reporting and Greenly strategy projections, helping to demonstrate that sustainable procurement decisions are supported by measurable evidence.

Durable components

Designing a more sustainable fabric blend need not mean sacrificing the durability required on heavy-duty infrastructure sites. Bespoke engineering allows the textile composition to be optimised for both circularity and a longer physical lifespan.

Lower-quality garments can deteriorate quickly under demanding site conditions. Bespoke ranges, by contrast, can incorporate durable components, reinforced stress points and carefully specified fabric weights to maximise longevity.

This level of design control can also support workforce diversity and equality. The BS 30417 inclusive PPE standard provides a framework for ensuring that sustainable fabric technologies are incorporated into designated female fits, modesty options and broad size ranges.

It’s well accepted that protective clothing that fits correctly is more likely to perform as intended. It can also reduce accidental damage and premature wear, allowing garments to remain in active service for longer before entering the recycling process.

Closing the loop with zero waste

Five-step recycling

The benefits of bespoke design continue when garments reach the end of their working lives. Fabric blends designed to be consistent and free from difficult-to-recycle contaminants are better suited to recovery and reuse within a circular system.

A structured zero-to-landfill policy can be supported by a straightforward five-step recycling programme. Retired clothing is collected securely, transported and shredded. This process destroys corporate branding and other identifying features, after which an official certificate of destruction can be issued.

The resulting regenerated fibres are then channelled into commercial manufacturing. Potential applications include thermal insulation and acoustic materials for the automotive industry.

Controlling the composition of workwear, PPE and corporate uniforms from the earliest design stage can therefore support workforce protection, extend garment lifespans and reduce waste. It provides a practical route through which safety, quality and environmental responsibility can be considered as complementary objectives rather than competing priorities.
